Philip II of Spain (1527-1598), son of Emperor Charles V, is the central figure of the"Black Legend,"a sinister, callous monarch holed up behind the walls of the Escorial, closely allied with the Catholic Church, a religious fanatic. Significant events such as the mysterious death of his son Don Carlos in prison or the deployment of the Armada against Protestant England provided sufficient material for this historical picture, which had been cultivated for centuries. Only recently has this image of the Spanish king, who left his unmistakable stamp on half a century, been corrected.
