Anyone who associates anything with Emperor Henry VI (1190-1197) usually thinks of a terrible despot who had his opponents executed in a cruel manner, unscrupulously pursued his own interests, sadistically tormented his wife Constance and the English crusader king Richard the Lionheart shamelessly blackmailed. By this gloomy picture Henry VI was. stamped as an outsider by the Staufer rulers, whose bad reputation contributed significantly to the fact that he is largely forgotten today. Wrongly. Because on closer inspection, this emperor shows himself to be one of the most interesting rulers of the High Middle Ages, who led the Roman Empire to a final climax in terms of ideas and power politics.
