The Jesuit Friedrich Spee von Langenfeld (1591 - 1635) is one of those personalities in history whose time was not ripe for the realization of their ideas. As a contemporary and witch confessor, he observed and suffered the rampant witch hunts. The"Cautio Criminalis"appeared without the permission of his superiors - a book that removed theological, legal and moral justification for the witch hunts, brought Spee into conflict with his superiors and primarily justified his posthumous fame.
